Nan Beck participated in an oral history interview conducted by Lisa Bannister on 23/09/1999. The interview was used to create a first-person narrative for Bannister's published work "Equal to the Challenge: An Anthology of Women's Experiences during World War II.”"Beck was living in Kingston, ON and attending high school when the war broke out. She remembers being excited about the news because it was something different. Like many girls, Beck left school to work, taken in by the idea of making money and the opportunity to get out of the house. She worked for the Aluminum Company of Canada until the age of nineteen when she joined the army in the hopes of following her husband who was stationed overseas. She quickly found out she could not deploy overseas until twenty-one but continued with basic training and a posting in Kitchener, ON. She worked in the Quartermaster's (QM) Stores and recalls her roles and the day to day life on the base. Beck left the army as soon as the war was over in order to be reunited with her husband. After the war there was a sense of hope for the future, however, there was still less employment opportunities for women. Beck remembers the camaraderie the most about the Army.
