Phyllis Barron participated in an oral history interview conducted by Lisa Bannister. The interview was used to create a first-person narrative for Bannister's published work "Equal to the Challenge: An Anthology of Women's Experiences during World War II." Barron was thirteen years old living just outside London, England when the war broke out. She remembers the build up to the war, with Jewish refugees brining stories over from Austria and Germany and the British Government issuing gas masks and air raid shelters, however, millions did not want to believe there would be a war. Since her family lived in what was considered a “danger zone”, due to proximity to an ammunition factory, she and many other children were evacuated and sent to live with other families. The war was slow to start in England so the children returned home by December 1939. The Battle of Dunkirk in May 1940 is when the war began to escalate and everyone began sleeping in air raid shelters. Barron remembers that people had to develop a sense of humour and find fun where they could in order to get through the war. Everyone became involved in the war effort. Barron volunteered at the hospital before joining the Auxiliary Territorial Service at eighteen as a Shorthand Typist for the Royal Engineers. This position took her to France, Brussels, Germany, and Calais during and after the war. She recalls the differences between the treatment of men and women in the army. She enjoyed the feeling of camaraderie and the sense that women could do anything. Barron believes military and war history is important because it helps people understand their country's values.
