Organized by the National Security Working Group, this conference, titled “Risk, Threat, and the "New Normal": An Interdisciplinary Conference on National Security,” was held at the University of Ottawa on March 3, 2006. This opening session, led by Michael Kempa, Professor of Criminology at the University of Ottawa, examined the characteristics of the "new normal." The panelists were Karim H. Karim from the School of Journalism and Communication at Carleton University, Wade Deisman, Director for the National Security Working Group, and Alex Neve, Secretary General for Amnesty International Canada.
