Victor Lyall participated in an oral history interview conducted by Dr. John MacFarlane for the Directorate of History and Heritage's History of Aboriginal Peoples in the Canadian Military project. The interview was conducted on 27/11/2001 via telephone between Ottawa and Maine. Lyall joined the military in 1986 while looking for employment and the opportunity to see the world. He discusses the training including the pre-introductory course for Aboriginal people, boot camp, battle school, and driving courses where he learned how to maneuver tanks. The majority of his three years of service were spent in Canada except six months in Cyprus, beginning in February 1989, as part of the UN Force. Lyall was placed on guard duty on the post and patrols. He comments on interactions with British and Dutch troops, describes a protest comprised of Greek women, and offers his opinion on the operations of the check points. Lyall brings up the question of whether or not military should be sent on missions where they are not supposed to fight. The interview concludes with comments on how the military influenced his life.
