Bill Lafferty participated in an oral history interview conducted by Dr. John MacFarlane for the Directorate of History and Heritage's History of Aboriginal Peoples in the Canadian Military project. The interview was conducted on 25/10/2001 via telephone between Ottawa and Fort Simpson, NWT. The interview begins with Lafferty discussing his Métis background, specifically their military culture, and his exposure to the military growing up. He was in his early teens during the Second World War and a large military presence in his town, including the Royal Canadian Engineers, Royal Canadian Corps of Signals, and the American Military. Lafferty states this had a cultural impact on his life. He enrolled January 1954, joined the Royal Canadian Engineers, 1st Middle East Detachment, and was sent to Egypt in 1956 with the UN. He describes the cultural characteristics that helped him and details the discoveries he made about the influence of early Mediterranean and European history on Métis culture and language. Lafferty is asked to discuss his engineering duties in Egypt and the cooperation with American and British forces while performing these duties. He is released from the military in 1972, however, he states he wishes he had made a career in the military, felt it was traditional of being Métis.
