Fred Young participated in an oral history interview conducted by Dr. John MacFarlane for the Directorate of History and Heritage's History of Aboriginal Peoples in the Canadian Military project. The interview was conducted on 22/07/2001 in Winnipeg, MB. The interview begins with Young recalling his early years, his community's perception of the war and military, and his enrollment in January of 1951. He arrived in Korea in September or October of 1951 and returned home November of 1953. Young is asked to describe the average day fighting in Korea, including food, sleep, transportation, typical issues, etc., and the type of arms and ammunition used by the gunners. He also speaks about the relationships between the forces from various nations, specifically addressing relations with Japan so soon after WWII. Young finishes by discussing the issues Korean War veterans faced upon returning home, how military service affected how others saw him, and how he was treated while in the military.
