Ed Borchert participated in an oral history interview conducted by Dr. John MacFarlane for the Directorate of History and Heritage's History of Aboriginal Peoples in the Canadian Military project. The interview was conducted on 05/02/2002 via telephone between Ottawa and Victoria. The interview begins with Borchert recalling the Native and military presences in his early years. He joined the military as an infantry man in 1964 and remained such until he retired in 1995. Borchert spent the late 60s in Germany during the Cold War. After Europe, he was shipped to Winnipeg. He was there for five years, during the FLQ Crisis which influenced training at the time. He continues to briefly mention his various positions and training during the late 70s and early 80s. He returned to Germany in 1984 and describes the differences from his first visit. The interview concludes with a discussion about the treatment of First Nations Veterans and his own treatment during his service.
