Toye, William, 1926- : William Toye est né à Toronto en 1926. Il travaille à Oxford University Press Canada après avoir obtenu son diplôme au Collège Victoria de l'Université de Toronto, en 1948. D'abord commis au service des commandes, il devient directeur de la production. Ses nouvelles responsabilités le poussent à étudier le processus de création des livres. Il devient membre de la Society of Typographic Designers of Canada, dont il est le président de 1961 à 1963.
À Oxford, M. Toye s'occupe des livres jeunesse, encourageant des auteurs et des illustrateurs canadiens comme Theo Dimson, Leo Rampen, Elizabeth Cleaver et Art Price. Il rédige lui aussi quelques livres pour enfants, notamment The St. Lawrence (1959), un livre sur l'histoire du fleuve Saint-Laurent applaudi par la critique, et Cartier Discovers the St. Lawrence (1970). Il collabore également avec l'artiste Elizabeth Cleaver, notamment pour The Loon's Necklace (1977), un ouvrage primé.
M. Toye devient directeur commercial à Oxford University Press en 1963 et directeur de la rédaction en 1969. Au cours de sa carrière, il révise les oeuvres de nombreux poètes canadiens de renom, y compris Margaret Atwood, Page, Jay Macpherson, John Glassco, F. R. Scott et A. J. M. Smith. Il révise aussi des livres sur les arts et l'architecture, dont Emily Carr: a Biography de Maria Tippett et Toronto Observed: the Architecture, Patrons and History de William Dendy et William Kilbourn.
En plus de réviser des manuscrits d'auteurs aux fins de publication, M. Toye dirige la publication de plusieurs ouvrages de référence, comme A Book of Canada (une anthologie de textes canadiens publiée par Collins en 1962) et The Oxford Anthology of Canadian Literature, en collaboration avec Robert Weaver (1973; 2e édition en 1981). Il est directeur de la publication pour les ouvrages The Supplement to the Oxford Companion to Canadian History and Literature (1973) et The Oxford Companion to Canadian Literature (1983, 2e édition en 1997), pour lequel il est également un contributeur important.
Il est aussi corédacteur du livre The Letters of Marshall McLuhan (1987), dont il écrit les notes détaillées. Son ouvrage The Concise Oxford Companion to Canadian Literature est publié en 2001. La deuxième édition de cet ouvrage a paru depuis. Bien que le nombre de pages (1200) ait presque diminué de moitié, M. Toye a pris le temps de mettre à jour les entrées restantes et d'en ajouter plus de soixante. De plus, dans son ouvrage à compte d'auteur On Canadian Literature (2005), M. Toye présente 121 auteurs canadiens regroupés par régions ainsi que leurs livres portant sur les Maritimes, Terre-Neuve, le Québec et l'Ontario.
En 1956, M. Toye devient un des rédacteurs fondateurs de l'influente revue littéraire canadienne Tamarack Review. Il collabore avec Robert Weaver, Kildare Dobbs, Millar MacLure, Anne Wilkinson et Ivon Owen. Il siège au comité de rédaction avec Robert Weaver, auquel se joignent ensuite John Robert Colombo et Janis Rapoport, jusqu'à ce que la revue cesse d'être publiée en 1982.
M. Toye, collègue et ami de nombreux auteurs canadiens, est nommé exécuteur testamentaire littéraire des poètes John Glassco, F. R. Scott et A. J. M. Smith. Il prend sa retraite d'Oxford en 1991, mais continue de travailler comme réviseur autonome, en particulier pour Concise History of Canadian Architecture, d'Harold Kalman, et Painting Place: The Life and Work of David B. Milne, de David Silcox.
