This series documents the activities of Robert Meighen (1837-1911), father of Elsie Reford (1872-1967) and president of Lake of the Woods Milling Company (1889-1902 and 1904-1911).

The business papers in this series document a variety of businesses including the Lake of the Woods Milling Co., the New Brunswick Railway and others. The personal papers in this series relate to his estate and to the trust set up by George Stephen, of which Meighen was a trustee.

Records in this series include: correspondence, contracts, financial statements, and estate papers.

Meighen, Robert, 1837-1911 : Robert Meighen (1837-1911), brother-in-law of George Stephen (Lord Mount Stephen) and father of Elsie Reford (1872-1967), was president of Lake of the Woods Milling Company (1889-1902, 1904-1911).

His documented business association with Stephen began in 1882 when he assumed the management of the Ontario and Quebec Railway. About this time he became involved with another of the firms in Stephen's CPR network, the New Brunswick Railway (NBR). Despite its name, the NBR was actually a land company controlling 1.6 million acres of forest. However, Meighen is best known as the president of the Lake of the Woods Milling Co. Founded in 1887 by members of the CPR syndicate it became the largest flour miller in the British Empire. His will set up separate trusts for his daughters, Elsie Reford and Mrs. Margaret Isabella Smith Harley.
