Fonds consists of personal and business correspondence throughout Mr. Swystun's life; materials relating to the formation of various Ukrainian organizations in Canada; legal documents involving the Ukrainian-Canadian communities; radio show addresses, copies of plays and speeches; and material relating to cultural and legal ties between Mr. Swystun and Soviet Ukraine.

Fonds also contains photographs of the early years in Canada and of official trips to Ukraine and the Soviet Union during the 1950s.

Swystun, Wasyl, 1893-1964 : Born in Sorotske, Ternopil oblast, Ukraine in 1893.

Died December 25, 1964 in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Wasyl Swystun came to Canada in 1913. He had already attended colleges in Ukraine and Romania, but continued his studies at the University of Saskatchewan, graduating with a BA honors in economics and philosophy.

Swystun started his career as a teacher and then became principal at Ethelbert High School in Manitoba. In 1925, he left for Winnipeg to found the Ukrainian Institute of Petro Mohyla of which he was the principal until 1931.From 1928 to 1932, he studied at the University of Manitoba Law School, practising law for the remainder of his life.

Swystun also helped organize the Ukrainian Self-Reliance League of Canada, the Ukrainian Canadian Committee, the Ukrainian Professional and Business Men's Club in Winnipeg and was a member of other community organizations.

He was also one of the founders and leaders of the Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Church of Canada and helped organize St. Mary the Protectress Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral. He worked closely in the early 1920s with notable Ukrainian community leaders such as Julian and Myroslav Stechyshyn, Joseph Bohonos, Taras Ferley, Rev. Wasyl Judryk and Rev. S. W. Sawchuk.

After 1946, Swystun specialized in international law and became an expert in Soviet law, receiving a Jurist degree from Kyiv University in 1957, travelling several times to Ukraine and the Soviet Union.
