Thompson, 1892-1894 (27e). Recherches et texte par Jacques MONET. Lecteurs: Jean GROULX et Gilles PROVOST. Né à Halifax fit ses études en droit et fut appelé au barreau de la Nouvelle-Ecosse en 1865. Proffeur de doit à l'Ecole de Droit Dalhousie de 1871 la 1875, il entra à l'Assemblée législative de la Nouvelle-Ecosse en 1877 et y resta jusqu'en 1882. Premier Ministre de la Nouvelle-Ecosse puis nomme à la Cour Suprême de la province, il fut élu aux Communes en 1885, pour détenir le ministère de la Justice et puis Premier Ministre. Son oeuvre est notable en tant que ministre de la Justice car il défendit son parti suite à l'affaire Riel, régla l'affaire des jésuites, mit sur pied le Code criminel canadien et reforma le système pénitentiaire.
