Né en Ecosse en 1822, Mackenzie après avoir oeuvre comme Magon dans son pays d'origine vint au Canada en 1842 et fut élu à l'Assemblée législative du Haut Canada en 1861. Devenu Chef du Parti libéral en 1873, à la suite du scandale du Pacifique qui encouru la démission de John A. Macdonald, il devint Premier Ministre. De son mandat, l'on retient une réforme importante de l'administration gouvernementale, du Parlement, de la Justice et de l'armée et surtout une importante réforme de la loi Hectorale du Canada et l'établissement de la souveraineté canadienne sur l'Ouest.
