Defence Research and Development Canada - Atlantic Research Centre : The Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC) Atlantic Research Center can trace its origins to a collaboration between National Research Council staff, Royal Canadian Navy officers, and Dalhousie University scientists during the Second World War. Originally, this team researched and developed techniques for degaussing naval ships, but the scope of their research expanded over the course of the war. In 1944, this unit was renamed HMC Naval Research Establishment (NRE) and was housed at HMCS Stadacona. When the Defence Research Board was established in 1947, it took over responsibility for the NRE, and soon after in 1952, a new permanent NRE laboratory was opened in Dartmouth. The NRE was renamed the Defence Research Establishment Atlantic (DREA) in 1967 and again as the DRDC Atlantic Research Center in 2000.

Almost immediately upon being transferred to the Defence Research Board, the NRE began focusing much of its research and development on hydrofoil crafts. Hydrofoil development was not new in Canada. Beginning in 1908, Alexander Graham Bell and Casey Baldwin experimented with hydrofoil crafts at the Bell estate on Bras d'Or Lake, Nova Scotia. Bell and Baldwin's HD-4 hydrofoil craft broke the watercraft speed world record in 1919. Baldwin continued developing hydrofoil prototypes in the 1930s and sold some crafts to the RCN during the Second World War.

The NRE (and later DREA) hydrofoil program used Bell and Baldwin's research as a starting point. Over the next two decades, they developed several hydrofoil crafts, particularly for submarine detection applications. The R-100, also known as the Massawippi or the KC-B, was completed in 1950. The Rx, a craft designed purely to test various hydrofoil configurations, was built in 1955. The R-103, originally known as the Bras d'Or, was completed in 1957 and was renamed the Beddeck in 1962. Finally, the FHE-400, which took over the Bras d'Or name, was completed in 1968. During trials in 1969, the FHE-400 broke the world record for fastest warship. However, as defense research priorities shifted away from anti-submarine warfare, the Minister of Defence cancelled the FHE-400 trial program in November 1971.
