The fonds consists of the records of Jean Weihs relating to the development of Library technician programs in Canada, the education of library technicians, and more generally the creation of this para-professional occupation to support the work of professional librarians. The records include research papers, course papers, and background documentation, including articles on library technicians by Jean Weihs and others; guidelines for the development of roles and responsibilities of librarians and library technicians; salary surveys; job descriptions and occupational data; Seneca College library technician course development materials; documents relating to other programs in Canada and the United States; distance education resources; records of Canadian Library Association committees on the training and accreditation of library technicians; material relating to School Libraries; and correspondence, papers, reports, and publications relating to library technicians.

Weihs, Jean, 1930- : Jean Weihs is a librarian and professor of library science who was the Director of the Library Technician program at Seneca College in Toronto from 1969 to 1986, and a Visiting Professor at the University of California, Los Angeles (1988) and Simmons College (1989), among holding other positions. She represented the Canadian Committee on Cataloguing for nine years on the Joint Steering Committee for Revision of AACR, five of these years as its chair. She developed, along with Ben Tucker (at that time the Acting Principal Cataloger at the Library of Congress), the list of General Material Designations that appeared in AACR2. Weihs has written or co-authored more than a dozen books and over 160 articles, chapters in books, and book reviews. Her books, often appearing in multiple editions, include Beginning Cataloging (Santa Barbara, Calif.: Libraries Unlimited, 2017, 2nd edition); Guide to Library of Congress Classification (Santa Barbara, Calif.: Libraries Unlimited, 2016, 6th edition); Standard Cataloging for School and Public Libraries (Englewood, CO: Libraries Unlimited, 2015, 5th edition); Introduction to Technical Services (Greenwood Village, CO: Libraries Unlimited, 2002, 7th edition); Special Libraries: A Cataloging Guide (Englewood, CO: Libraries Unlimited, 1998); and Nonbook Materials: The Organization of Integrated Collections (Ottawa, Canadian Library Association, 1989, 3rd edition), among others.

Weihs has been the recipient of thirteen national and international awards, including the Order of Canada in 2018 and the World Library Leaders Life Time Achievement Award from the Satija Research Foundation for Library and Information Science (India) in 2013.
