The series consists of John Ralston Saul's files relating to his agents and publishers, including contracts and agreements; correspondence with editors, publicists, and agents; book design and promotional material; mailing lists and other material related to his books. The publishers' files include Granada/Grafton Books (London), Éditions du Seuil (Paris), McGraw-Hill (U. S.), Doubleday (U. S.); and Macmillan (Canada). His correspondence with publishers discusses editorial issues, the design and layout of books, publicity and reviews, and includes letters from Patricia Parkin (Grafton), Sally Arteseros (Doubleday), Alfred Knopf Jr. (McGraw-Hill), and Claude Durand (Éditions du Seuil). The mailing list files are more diverse than the title suggests, also including itineraries of multi-city book tours, book signings and media interviews.

The agency files reveal his representation by Robin Straus Agency (U.S.), JCA Literary Agency (U.S.), Curtis Brown (London), Carmen Balcells (Barcelona), and other literary agents in Italy, Japan, Germany, Netherlands, Scandinavia, and Yugoslavia. Saul's correspondence with agents covers the submission and selling of manuscripts to publishing houses; issues relating to publishing rights and agreements; and expressions of interest or rejections from publishers. It holds correspondence with agents Michael Shaw (Curtis Brown), John Cushman (JCA Literary Agency), and Robin Straus; and correspondence with editors Joe Fox (Random House) and Corlies Smith (Viking Press), among others. There are also separate files from the 1990s of contracts and agreements with Penguin, Random House, The Free Press, Knopf, Éditions Payot, for Voltaire's Bastards, The Doubter's Companion, and The Unconscious Civilization.
