The series consists of textual records, photographs, and maps relating to various writings by John Ralston Saul, including op-ed pieces for Canadian and international newspapers; feature articles for magazines; prefaces and forewords in books; articles in published anthologies; book reviews; and position papers on government policy. The series holds both files for specific writing projects and notebooks of draft writings. These manuscript notebooks, primarily for the 1980s, include fiction and non-fiction and overlap with both the Novels and Speeches series, particularly in containing some draft writings for De si bons Américains. Many early drafts of his articles, speeches, and letters to the editor are found in the notebooks.

Saul's files for specific writing projects at different times were arranged or assembled chronologically or alphabetically by subject. His writings from the later 1970s and early 1980s were often offshoots from research for his novels, including pieces on Morocco, Thailand, and Burma, or which addressed the position of Quebec in Canada. Through the 1980s and 1990s, he wrote widely, covering issues such as war, art, literature, France, Southeast Asia, Morocco, Canadian culture, free trade, economics, and travel writing. Some of the periodicals in which his work appeared more frequently were The Spectator, Harper's Magazine, Field Magazine, Sunday Times, Telegraph Sunday Magazine, Globe and Mail, Report on Business Magazine, New York Times, Financial Post, World Monitor, Queen's Quarterly, Nouvel Observateur, and Actualité. His report on "Culture and Foreign Policy" for the 1994 Joint Senate and House of Commons Committee reviewing Foreign Policy argued that projecting Canadian culture and values abroad should be the "third pillar" of Canadian foreign policy (along with security and trade). These files hold his original drafts and final report, and records related to the adoption of this approach. Saul also actively contributed to the free trade debate in 1987 and 1988, and debated Quebec's relationship with Canada in print with Gérard Bouchard in the pages of Le Devoir.
