This accession consists of files created and/or maintained by the Ministry of State for Economic Development or MSED (later re-titled as the Ministry of State for Economic and Regional Development, or MSERD). These files consist of horizontal policy initiatives related to Transportation Policy, specifically in the areas of Air, Rail, Road, Marine, and Grain transportation. Transportation Policy refers to measures providing support to the national transportations system including all for-hire commercial transport by air, rail, water, truck and bus, with particular files on Transportation research & development, a panel on transportation research and development, Roberts Bank, and the Newfoundland Transportation Service.
Air Transportation Policy includes measures to ensure the development and operation of a safe and efficient national civil air transportation system, with specific files on: air fare regulation, Hamilton airport redevelopment, Canadian Air Transportation Administration (CATA), Domestic air policy (unit-toll services), Prairie Air Services, Federal Airport Management Policy, Dash Air (STOL), Air Transportation Tax, and the Montreal Airports System.
Rail Transportation Policy refers to measures to ensure the development of an efficient national railway system, including viable rail carriers, to meet the requirements of the economy for freight transportation and rail passenger services. With particular files on: Via Rail, Regina rail relocation, and the White Pass & Yukon Railway.
Road Transportation Policy covers measures to ensure development of a road transportation system, including availability of adequate extra-provincial trucking services, and provision of road infrastructure in certain circumstances.
Marine Transportation Policy comprises measures to facilitate the movement of goods and people over water including safety, marine pollution, icebreaking, and other marine related matters, with specific files on: the Canadian deep sea shipping fleet, Coast Guard fleet capital investment plan, polar icebreakers, East Coast Loran, Maritime Code, Arctic marine transportation, St. Lawrence Seaway Extension, Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated, the dredging of Miramichi River, National Search & Rescue Plan (SAR), Coast Guard College Athletic Facilities, ICE Service Program, and CN Marine Inc.
Grain Transportation Policy involves measures to ensure development of a viable and efficient handling and transportation system for grain, with specific files on: Crow's Nest Pass Rates (Hopper Cars), Media monitoring of announcement on CROW, and grain storage facilities.
