The stated purpose of the Mineral Area Planning Study (MAPS) was to provide a framework to assist the Department of Energy, Mines, and Resources (EMR) in assigning area priorities in its management of Canada's mineral resources within the context of a national mineral policy. The study results were released in 1975. According to the study authors, the impetus for the MAPS study was the need for EMR to respond to initiatives of the Department of Regional Economic Expansion in a consistent manner. The initial phase began in 1972 with the analysis of historical data relating to mineral resources, examination of new mines and known reserves, with the objective of gathering data identifying mineral deposits in Canada. Forecasts were then prepared showing Canadian capacities in various mineral resources. MAPS itself evolved during a series of intradepartmental meetings in early 1973 that were attended by the following areas of EMR: the Mineral Resources Branch (renamed the Mineral Development Sector in 1974), the Geological Survey, the Mines Branch, and Planning & Evaluation.
This accession consists of a variety of reports, drafts, memoranda, charts, supporting data, meeting minutes, presentation material, and other records from the Mineral Area Planning Study (MAPS). The accession also includes a 1973 final report from MAPS' precursor, the Mineral Area Classification Study (MACS), as well as data sheets from Operation September, presumably because they were used by MAPS staff.
