The Health Protection Branch is responsible for protecting Canadian from the health hazards caused by foods, human and veterinary drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, food packaging and environmental contaminants. The Branch monitors manufacturers and vendors of food and drug products for compliance with various federal laws and regulations through laboratory testing and the investigations of its offices in the field.

In 1947, the department began to reorganize its functions which dealt with food and drugs by creating the Food and Drug Divisions, which later became the Foods Directorate and the Drugs Directorate, respectively. Under various names such as Laboratory Services, or Investigation and Research, scientists carried out basic research on food and drugs, including the development of methods of analysis and related standards.

The records in this accession were acquired from the Methodology Officer of the Food Research Division of the Bureau of Chemical Safety, Foods Directorate. They are working files which consist primarily of binders containing copies of official methods of analysis for foods and drugs, pesticides, and vitamins, laboratory bulletins for new methodologies, and trade information letters.
