The records in this sub-series consist of a complete set of documents, which is rare for a founding company that has survived since incorporation. The records go back to 1883. They pertain to its management and its development. Corporate and financial files provide detailed information on the company's dealings. Among this valuable documentation are minute books of Directors' meetings, letter books, By-Laws and Incorporations, ledgers of accounts, balance sheets, assets and liabilities, profit and lost statements, trusts, mortgages and shareholders transfer books which contain share certificates. They provide information on aspects of the company's decisions, administration and operations. Insurance and mill property appraisals files are very useful to understand the company expansion. Subscription policies were the most common form of insurance. They provided protection to the company and offered indemnities. They covered loss and damaged to mills, accidents, material handled, equipment and machinery. Used along property documents such as deed of land, leases, inventories and agreements, appraisal records describe in detail the value of properties. Drawings of mills are often included into plant appraisals. Of particular research interest are files related to the Sarnia property in Ontario which describe the location of factories and properties sold to the Dominion Wire Manufacturing Co.

When the company purchased one of its competitors, The Dominion Barb Co., the documents produced by this smaller company were preserved in the Montreal Office. They are available in this sub-series. Files contain corporate, legal, financial records and property records.

Dominion Wire Manufacturing Company Limited : In 1872, James Cooper and Frederick Fairman saw the possibilities of manufacturing iron products and one of the many enterprises originated by them was the Dominion Barb Wire Co. Limited. This company produced "lyman" galvanized barbed wire under rights purchased from Washburn & Moen of Worcester, Mass. The mill company's was situated on a tract of 16 acres of land on St. Joseph Street contiguous to the Lachine Canal in Montreal. The Dominion Barb Wire Co. was re-incorporated as The Dominion Wire Manufacturing Co. in 1883. The entire factory, with the exception of wire rope department, was purchased by William H. Farrell, brother of James A. Farrell, at one time President of the United States Steel Corporation. Close to rail and water facilities, the company manufactured various wire products.

In 1910, the company passed into the control of The Steel Company of Canada Limited and became with the Montreal Rolling Mills, part of what is known as Montreal Works.
