The records in this sub-series consist of a complete set of documents, which is rare for a founding company that has survived since incorporation.

The records go back to 1873. They pertain to the management and the development of smaller amalgamated companies which formed The Canada Bolt and Nut Co. Corporate and financial files provide detailed information on the companies' dealings. Among this valuable documentation are minute books of Directors' meetings, letter books, By-Laws and Incorporations, ledgers of accounts, balance sheets, assets and liabilities, profit and lost statements and shareholders transfer books that contain share certificates. They provide information on aspects of the companies' decisions, administration and operations. Mill property appraisals files are very useful to understand the company expansion. Used along the property documents such as deed of land, leases, inventories and agreements, they describe in detail the value of properties. Drawings of mills are often included into plant appraisals. Of particular research interest is a commercial planning report writing by a manager following a visit to the Gananoque Mill in 1915 (volume 160 file 18).

Canada Bolt and Nut Company Limited : The Canada Bolt and Nut Co. Limited originated in 1868, when Hugh Allan incorporated an industry for the production of bolts and nuts at Perth in Ontario under the name of The Canadian Bolt Company. After four years of operation, the plant was moved to Toronto at the corner of Front and Sherbourne streets. The company did not make profits and its facilities closed. In 1879, the plant was bought by John Livingston who provided new capital and improved machinery. The demand of products such as track bolts, spikes, nuts, rivets and rods for the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway allowed to this company to expand its facilities. In 1880, the name of the company changed to The Dominion Bolt and Nut Company. In 1882, the expansion continued. A tract of land on the Great Western Division of the Grand Trunk Railway close to the City of Toronto was purchased and new mill buildings were erected.

In 1883, The Dominion Bolt and Iron Company took over the assets of The Dominion Bolt and Nut Company providing new capital and the machinery moved from Sherbourne street to a new building near Humber street. John Livingston was President and John Stephens, superintendent. The plant amalgamated successive smaller companies in Ontario such as The Toronto Bolt and Forging Co., The Brantford Screw Co., The Gananoque Bolt Co., The Belleville Iron and Horseshoe Co., and many others. With the introduction of electricity as motive power, the scope of the business increased. In 1910, the company was again re incorporated as The Canada Bolt and Nut Co. Ltd. The company occupied at this time 33 acres of lands with excellent transportation facilities. Workmen produced bolts, nuts, rivets, horseshoes, nails, tacks, wood screws, wire, forgings and axles. In July 1910, The Canada Bolt and Nut Co. was part of the foundation of The Steel Company of Canada Limited.
