When the United States' Space Program introduced its Space Transportation System (STS) program (Space Shuttle), Canada became responsible for the engineering design of the STS' Remote Manipulator System (RMS), more commonly known as the Canada Space Arm or the Canadarm. Designed to simulate the movements and capabilities of the human hand and arm, the Space Arm enabled each mission to set up and move various payloads in space required to conduct and complete certain tasks.

The National Research Council was the agency responsible for coordinating the design and production of the space arm. SPAR Aerospace, a private Canadian aerospace engineering company, was directly responsible for the design, production and testing of the arm.

This registration consists of 11 technical drawings labelled ITRS (exact meaning unknown), which appear to be components related to the Canadarm. One drawing in this record is a technical drawing of the entirety of what appears to be the Canadarm from a side view. Support for the drawing being the Canadarm includes the overall shape as well as the coordinate system which is displayed on the drawing correlates with the Space Shuttle coordinate system, where X=0 corresponds to the end of the external tank.
