The Department of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness (now commonly Public Safety Canada) was created to bring together those functions of the Federal public service which fell under the general umbrella of public safety. As such it inherited many of the responsibilities and roles of the Office of the Solicitor General

Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Canada : Department of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness was created by the Department of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Act S.C. 2005, c. 10 (Bill C-6 (38/01), as passed by the House of Commons on November 17, 2004) which received Royal Assent on March 23, 2005. According to this legislation, the powers, duties and functions of the Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness extend to and include all matters over which Parliament has jurisdiction - and that have not been assigned by law to another department, board or agency of the Government of Canada - relating to public safety and emergency preparedness. The Minister is responsible for exercising leadership at the national level relating to public safety and emergency preparedness. In carrying out these duties the Minister shall coordinate the activities of the entities for which the Minister is responsible, including the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, the Canada Border Services Agency, the Canadian Firearms Centre, the Correctional Service of Canada and the Parole Board of Canada, and establish strategic priorities for those entities relating to public safety and emergency preparedness.
