"Now the Pickett family was from Newfoundland before I was here. And for a long time too - the Pickett's left Cornwell, England, in 1754 and put down roots on Fogo Island. For each generation in Newfoundland, the Pickett's made their wages by fishing, with one exception: we packed up and left. Too difficult to make a living off the fish and it didn't look like a change was coming. No better now, either. Fish never came back. But I work in Summerside now, at a furniture store; salesman." Pat looks up and out over an empty sea. "I'd rather fish......so every weekend, and whenever I can get time in the week, I'm out here fishing." "It's not the way to make a living," he adds, "just the way to make a life."
