A year and a half ago, they came back from the cabin to stare at their possessions: ashes, a chimney, and between the two of them, 20 dollars. The community banded together and gave them $12,000 to start a new home. To pay for the roof and walls, they have picked like ravens through wet garbage at the island dump. A nickel a throw for a house. They invite me back for tea at their new home. I have Mabel's business card. It says Open Pit Mines, Road Cleaning, CIL Explosives. Mabel E. Leyte. She's the only licensed blaster in Canada. Joe adds: "Lady blaster, that is." That number of work gloves on the line, that wallpaper rock backdrop, marks their resilience; a signpost to their home.
