Amongst the Eskimos in the Eastern Arctic the custom of promising a baby in marriage is still quite prevalent. Ordinarily, this works out quite well, for the two children concerned are usually of an age. However, when one of the children dies, complications may arise, as is seen in this instance. Here the girl had been promised in marriage to the boy's brother, but the brother died. The custom in such instances is to arrange that the next younger take his brother's place. Thus in this case, one finds that a girl about fifteen years of age is promised in marriage to this young lad who would be approximately eight years of age.
