This accession contains manuscript copies of early maps of Ontario, Quebec and the Maritime provinces that were in the custody of the National Map Collection, National Archives of Canada.

The maps in this accession were created as part of the copying programme of the Public Archives of Canada, whereby original maps of Canada held in British and French repositories were traced or transcribed for the purpose of making them available to researchers in Canada. Most maps originate from the old Q series of the Dominion Archives which contained "Copies of the colonial correspondence relating to the Province of Quebec, 1759-1791, and to the Provinces of Upper and Lower Canada, 1791-1841"; and from the M series, which contained "Copies of colonial correspondence".

Copying work for these maps is believed to have been done between 1907 and 1926 under the direction of H. R. Holmden, Chief of the Map Division. Known copyists for these maps include C. Pettigrew, A. Simone, and W. N. D. Some items were later photostated in December 1960.

These items were held in the custody of the Public Archives of Canada, Map Division which later became the National Map Collection, National Archives of Canada. The exact provenance and date of reception is unknown.
