Oral history interview by Donald Montgomery, Director of Education for the Canadian Labour Congress, of Joseph Dwan, labour organizer and sportsman. He was a longtime business agent for Local 46 of the Plumber's Union and is age 69. He joined the union on 24 July 1914, served overseas with the 48th Highlanders, transferred his card to New York in 1924 and spent 10 years in New York with the Yonkers local. He went to Cleveland in 1927 and returned to Toronto in 1932. This interview was done in Toronto, Ontario. Dwan talks about such subjects as: the Depression of the 1930s; his becoming active in Local 46 in 1940; sports activities in the early 1900s; the organization of pipe coverers; the working conditions when he started to work; the introduction of copper piping and acetylene welding and how workers reacted to this; and early Labour Day parades in Toronto. <1h 4mn>
