Interview given by Paul Martin Sr. to an unidentified radio journalist, concerning his political career. Included subjects are his appointment as Minister of National Health and Welfare in 1946 and his plan for a Canadian health insurance, the opposition by other Cabinet ministers such as C.D. Howe and Louis St. Laurent to this project, convincing the Provinces to agree, the bad press by the medical associations and the U.S. media describing Martin as a communist, his involvement to improve the social and health conditions of the First Nations People, the election of the Conservatives in 1957, Martin’s views on the Avro Arrow affair and its long-term impact on research and development and high technology in Canada, his nomination in 1963 as Secretary of State for External Affairs by Lester B. Pearson, the difficult relations with the U.S. during the Vietnam War, the Canadian attempts to have peace and the secret negotiations with the Vietnamese, the episode of Charles de Gaulle’s speech in 1967 on the Québec Libre, the Liberal Party of Canada (LPC) leadership election of 1968, Martin’s opinion of Pierre Elliott Trudeau, Martin’s wish to keep his Foreign Affairs post and Trudeau’s deal with Mitchell Sharp, Martin’s memories of the 1970 October Crisis, his views that the War Measures Act was the right thing to do since the Cabinet didn’t know how serious the situation was and the Premier of Quebec requested military intervention, the impact of these events on James Richard Cross whom Martin met afterwards, the roots in Quebec of this violent discontent against the British influence, Martin’s career as Senator and the improvement of his opinion of the Senate during his nomination, praise for the nomination of people from other political parties to the Senate by Trudeau, Martin’s views on the role of the Senate, his nomination as Canadian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom in 1975, his love for Cambridge, the friendly relation he made in London while he was ambassador, praise for Joe Clark’s work as Minister of Foreign Affairs, the political career of his son Paul Edgar Philippe Martin, his son’s actual candidacy for the LPC leadership, and his pride for Paul Martin Jr. <90mn>
