This is the ninth program in a series of 10 radio programs on the sounds of Canadian history. It is about the controversy over the adoption of a new Canadian flag. The maple leaf, centrepiece of the new flag, had been a Canadian symbol as early as 1805. When the Prince of Wales toured Canada in 1860 it was used for decorative purposes. Previously Canada used the Union Jack, Britain's flag. During the Second World War Canada used the Red Ensign as its flag. This was the flag of the British merchant marine, embellished with the Canadian coat of arms. Francophone Canadians wanted a flag with no foreign symbols. In 1961 Lester B. Pearson promised that he would establish a distinctive Canadian flag within two years of becoming Prime Minister. He became Prime Minister in 1963 and the new flag design became a matter of controversy and debate in 1964. Despite objections from the Legion, Pearson introduced the details of the new flag to Parliament shortly after the Legion convention.The flag had three red maple leaves on a single stem on a white background, with two vertical blue lines. This radio documentary includes the following radio extracts: Judge C.C. Sparling, national president of the Royal Canadian Legion, about objections of Legion members to a new flag; Lester Pearson speaking to a Legion Convention in Winnipeg on 18 May 1964 about his proposal for a new flag; Judge Sparling explaining the objections to the new flag design; John Diefenbaker's objections to the new flag; Mrs. D.W. (Pauline) McGibbon, national president of the Imperial Order of Daughters of the Empire, in May 1964; Lester B. Pearson defending the flag design; a CBC National News report of 12 June 1964 about an exchange between New Democratic Party Member of Parliament Harold Winch and a public works employee about flying the new flag on Parliament Hill; a report by John O'Leary on August 10, 1964; a report by John O'Leary on 10 September 1964; a report by Ken Mason on 7 October 1964; comments by John Diefenbaker in October 1964; a report by Ken Mason on 29 October 1964; comments by Leon Balcer on imposing closure on the flag debate; a 16 December 1964 CBC report on the passage of the act giving us a new flag on 15 December 1964; the official ceremony raising the flag for the first time on February 15, 1965 and comments by Pearson on the new flag. <30mn>
