This is the fourth program in the series and is the first of three programs about Canada in the Second World War, using excerpts of archival audio from the collections of the Public Archives of Canada and the CBC. Subjects include: the start of the war in 1939; preparations for war; recruiting; the lack of weapons, naval vessels and fighter planes for the Canadian armed forces at the start of the war; the wait by Canadian troops to get into battle; Dunkirk; the disaster at Hong Kong in December 1941; the loss at Dieppe; Canadian military action in the Italian campaign; Canadian women serving in the air force, army and navy; the sinking of the Scharnhorst; . Archival clips include: J. Frank Willis reporting on the departure of the First Canadian Division in December 1939; Flight Lieutenant Tilley about the journey to Britain under threat of German submarine attack; William Lyon Mackenzie King speaking to Canadian troops at Aldershot in August 1941; war correspondent Matthew Halton reporting from Italy; Canadian soldiers celebrating Christmas near Ortona in 1943; war correspondent Marcel Ouimet reporting from the Appenines; another report by Matthew Halton; Chatelaine magazine managing editor Marietta MacPherson reporting on Canadian women serving in the air force; the role of the Canadian navy; an interview by Andrew Cowan of Earl Macdonald of Dartmouth and Pat Cook, both of HMS Sheffield; an October 1944 report by correspondent Bill Herbert about how Canadian soldiers helped liberate an Italian conscript; and a report from Cairo in October 1944 by a Royal Canadian Air Force chaplain, Reverend Ernest Harston. <30mn>
