Interview of John L. Orr by Don Phillipson. Subjects discussed include: Orr's joining NRC in charge of aircraft de-icing in 1940, where he and staff successfully developed the process of electro-thermal propeller de-icing; NRC world patents universally adopted postwar; during post-war, Orr went to Cal Tech on an NRC scholarship and was the section head of the Low Tech Lab for continued aircraft de-icing work; de-icing methods of research originated in the NRC Physics Division; ice wagon aircraft tested hydrophobic water of D.F. Stedman; Low Tech Lab facilities were completed in 1948; Low Tech Lab wing de-icing was fitted to the CF-100 but was not widely adopted and was superseded by using hot jet engine gases to heat the wing continuously; during post-war, NRC acquired the North Star Ice Wagon; heated windshield with electrically conducting glass developed by the Corning Glass Company and field tested by the NRC; commercial development of NRC patents; self-financing of NRC labs; by 1952, propeller de-icing was perfected and wing de-icing became unfeasible; National Aeronautical Establishment launched in 1951, and was modeled on the British Royal Aircraft Establishment as a single agency; Canadian railways adopting diesel-electric engines in 1953; NRC gas-turbine locomotive project; and the Manpower mobility policy. <1h30mn>
