Robert Pilot in addition to being a painter, and illustrator was an accomplished print-maker in the medium of etching. He seems to have chosen to work in a medium unexplored by his famous step-father Maurice Cullen. His etchings were produced in only limited quantities making them quite unique today. Pilot became a professor of engraving at the École des Beaux-Arts in 1938. The setting of this work is significant as Maurice Cullen moved to Chambly in 1926, retiring there in a stone building where he set up a studio. He lived the rest of his life there until his death in 1934, at a time when Pilot was active in the art community of Montreal.

Historique de la conservation :

Originally given to the donor's father-in-law, Mr. Rickson Albert Outhet. He was a noted landscape architect and was also a great friend of Maurice Cullen, A.Y. Jackson, Harry Jackson and Brodie Shearer. Upon his death, this part of Rickson Albert Outhet's estate went to his son Murray McClaren Outhet, the husband of the donor: Mrs. Harriet Outhet.

Robert Pilot (1898-1967) was the youngest step-son of Maurice Cullen (1866-1934). Maurice Cullen was a friend of Rickson Albert Outhet, and they all knew each other in Montreal.
