The Meteorological Office of the Dominion of Canada was established in 1871 under the authority of the Marine Branch, Department of Marine and Fisheries. In 1898, the Pacific Coast Divisiion of the office, which by this time had come to be known as the Canadian Meteorological Service, was created with Victoria serving as its divisional headquarters. From that year on Ward, Victoria issued weather forecasts and storm warnings for British Columbia. Meteorological readings were taken three times a day at set times and forecasts were made and distributed twice daily.
The service also prepared weekly and monthly provincial weather summaries. In 1914, the headquarters was moved from its downtown Victoria location in the post office building to the Gonzales Heights Observatory. In 1936, the Meteorological Service became the Meteorological Division of Air Services in the Department of Transport.
This accession consists of large bound volumes of weather maps which provide a daily record of temperature, air pressure, wind velocity, and precipitation for the west coast of North America. Each volume represents one month; each map represents a set time each day when meteorological readings were taken (usually 5:00 a.m.; 12:00 p.m.; 5:00 p.m.). There are some gaps in the chronological coverage of the volumes, particularly during the period 1940-1944. Also included is a "Secular Means" volume which records aggregate meteorological readings from each weather station in B.C. for the period 1908-1915.

These records were originally held in British Columbia. They were transferred to the National Capital Region in 2016 and are available for consultation there.
