The item comprises an oil portrait painting of the Dominion Textile Company's first president, elected in 1905. The sitter is David Yuile.

The painting is a head and shoulders portrait of a man with brown eyes, dark brown/black hair, moustache and beard with some grey highlights. He is dressed in a shirt vest with collar and jacket in keeping with the turn of the century business attire. The pigment looks somewhat recent and is in pristine condition ; the colour is vibrant. The painting of the eyes seems rather clumsy and the skin is tinged with pink patches with some green around hairlines of the forehead and the edge of the beard. There are no inscriptions visible on the recto. Upon first examination the verso was completely covered with brown backing paper. It has since been removed, revealing a young looking stretcher set in a fairly aged frame. Again there are no inscriptions visible. However an engraved brass label on the bottom of the frame bears the inscription: David Yuile.

Yuile, David, 1846-1909 : David Yuile, born 20 February 1846 in Glasgow, Scotland, died 21 June 1909 after an operation he had performed in Baltimore, only 4 years after assuming the company presidency.

He arrived in Canada with his family around 1857, settling in Ingersoll, Upper Canada. After moving to Montreal with his family he later joined his brother William's firm. William had a general merchant business. David and William became very successful in various business ventures, most notably amalgamating several glassworks companies and turning a profit with them. David was involved in various business ventures and later as a Director of the Penman manufacturing company, he became involved in the merger of a number of important cotton mills which were to form the Dominion Textile Company. He was then elected first president of the new firm.

David married Margaret King in Montreal on 11 June 1878. they had four daughters.

Dating the portrait is probematic. Although he would have been 59 when he became the company president, and 63 when he died, he appears to be younger in the portrait, possibly even somewhere around 40 years of age. The image has a stilted look and is likely not painted from life. Various factors suggest it could have been copied or derived from a photograph or other source and possibly has been painted posthumously after his unexpected death. There is a similar image of him; it is an albumen print on paper by Notman & Sandham, dated 1880, 19th century, found at the McCord Museum. In the photograph the sitter has the same head and shoulders pose and he is turned slightly to his right. His hair and facial hair are very similar and he is wearing the same clothing. In 1880 he would have been 34 years old. A ca. date of 1909-1950 has been assigned; from immediately following his death to much later when there was a flurry of company activity surrounding corporate upgrading and consumer awareness, possibly spurring public identity promotion through corporate art.
