In January 1950, the Industrial Health Division of Health and Welfare created a Health Radiation Laboratory to assess the health risks from exposure to X-rays and radioactive isotopes. The Laboratory was later renamed the Radiation Protection Division, and in 1969, became one of the three bureaus of the new Environmental Health Directorate.

The Radiation Protection Bureau protects Canadians from the dangers associated with radioactivity by monitoring radioactivity levels in the air and water, evaluating radioisotope license applications, measuring and recording radiation exposure of workers, and evaluates consumer products which emit radiation under the authority of the Radiation Emitting Devices Act of 1972.

Accession consists of records created and/or maintained by Healthy Environment and Consumer Safety Branch, Radiation Protection Bureau. From the file titles, records include subjects pertaining to the certification of food, radioactive waste, radon levels, Federal Nuclear Emergency Response Plan, international liaison concerning radiation safety, electronic and X-Ray devices compliance reports, committees (e.g., Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation), acoustics, water quality, International Atomic Energy Board, Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd., Health and Welfare grants, Bureau of Medical Devices, and criticism of service. The records in boxes 1-22 were largely created in the 1980s and 1990s. Boxes 18 to 23 contain dose history requests from 1989-1997.
