From 1953 to 1962, Environmental Health and Special Projects of the Health Services Directorate of the Department of National Health and Welfare served as an umbrella unit to oversee the divisions which were charged with environmental health responsibilities: Occupational Health, Public Health Engineering, and Radiation Protection. This unit was reestablished as the Environmental Health Directorate in 1970, and was responsible for studying, and in some cases controlling, the effects of various health hazards on Canadians, such as radiation and toxic chemicals in the air and in water. The Directorate became part of the new Health Protection Branch in January, 1972.

The Occupational Health Division was first established in 1938 as the Division of Industrial Hygiene. Its original mandate was to promote good health practices in the workplace and to act as a consultant on occupational health to other federal and provincial government departments and agencies. By the late 1960s, the Division was concerned not only with such occupational health concerns as dangerous substances, heat, noise, lighting, and radiation, but with all aspects of environmental health.

The records in this accession consist of administrative files of the Environmental Health Directorate, as well as a small number of administrative and operational files of the Occupational Health Division in Box 10. The administrative files of both units concern matters such as personnel, equipment, legislation, and associations, committees, and conferences.
