A light-hearted look at the role of water on the lives of the Dutch people: Reel 1 and 2 - Kids learn to swim; sequence onsmall scale and large scale commerical fishseries; engineering works, bridges, canel locks, dikes; boating on all types and sizes of craft. Rell 3 - Thoughts and job of a Rotterdam harbour boatman with views of the harbour, ships from all over the world, a meal and a musical session on board a "Bombayer". Sequence on operation of tugboats, sequence on regatta,thrilling sailboat races and celebrations. Reel 4 and 5 -polluted water, fish dead and dying by the thousands, a rat running in filthy water. Winter sports: ice boating, skating.Sequence on a small ice-breaker in operation. Several St.Nicholas are shown arriving by boat, being cheered by kids.Sequence on sea rescue with boats, ships and helicopter. Aerial of sinking ship of freighter high and dry on beach.
