Interview of Dr. George S. Field by Don Phillipson. Subjects discussed include: Field working during summer of 1929 for the Department of the Interior and returned to University of Alberta on leave of absence; resigned in 1930 to join the NRC; industry began to approach NRC with sound-proofing problems therefore Field and Boyle planned appropriate facilities such as the reverberation chamber for surface absorption of materials and adjoining second chamber to measure transmission of sound through materials; Field also worked on acoustics of the House of Commons and the Senate; in Physics, Boyle did not draft a research program - he hired staff for the main labs and left them to develop their own programs; sound recording instruments - war work on ships sounds used disc recorders; 1934 visit to US Bureau of Standards acoustic lab was to plan the NRC's transmission and reverb chambers; WWII; RCN wartime research system; Mackenzie became RCN director of scientific research aided by Rose; Halifax field station; Vancouver field station; NRC built dock at the mouth of the Rideau River with training building; acoustics lab designed exclusively by NRC for industrial clients; Sir Charles Wright worked for Pacific Naval Lab under Dr. F. Sanders; and during pre-war, Field visited RCA Ltd at Camden, NJ, where TV labs had closer security than any military laboratory. <2h 21mn>

1. Subject description taken from partial transcript in binder, National Research Council Oral History Project, Index A-G.~2. PAC tape 585 b and 586 a.~3. George S. Field worked in the Physics Division at NRC from 1930 to 1947, served with the RCN in 1947 and then became Chief scientist of the Defense Research Board (DRB) in 1947. The DRB was responsible for giving scientific advice to the Government of Canada on military matters.
