In the castle of Vogelod the owner, his wife and his hunting companions await the arrival of the Baroness von Safferstadt and her husband; Count Peter Paul Aetsch, died three years previously in mysterious circumstances, the guests suspect that it was his brother, Johann Detsch, who shot him. The brother himself arrives at the castle. Baroness wants to leave, but decides to stay in order to see Father Faramund, a distant relative of her first husband, who arrives later. After the spoiled hunting party and a night full of mysterious events the Baroness reveals that it was Baron Safferstadt who shot her husband. Safferstadt confirms the murder in a confession to Father Faramund, who then removes his mask. It appears that it is Count Jahann Detsch disguised as a monk.
