The Public Affairs Directorate (PAD) is responsible for National Health and Welfare's public relations with the media and governmental and non-governmental agencies as well as with members of the general public. The PAD, formerly the Information Directorate, issues national news releases, conducts media interviews, advertises departmental activities, and performs publishing and design services on the Department's behalf.

The records in this accession contain subject files on the multifarious functions and activities of various branches within this Department. These files are in turn organized by division which contain publicity publications, press releases, clippings, and other informational literature on numerous subjects. Those subjects covered include, smoking and health, welfare grants, non-medical use of drugs, and national health week in additional to many others.
