Interview of Dr. J.L. Farrar by Don Phillipson. Subjects discussed include: NRC's forestry program; creation of the Petawawa Forest Station; a 1918 project of effective thinning of trees; C.C. Heimburger's seminar on poplar breeding in 1935; filling wartime gap when Dominion Forest Service stopped research; if colchicine and root stimulation had worked, there would have been economic success and samples could have been tested at Government Forest Products Lab in Montreal; NRC's decision to get out of forestry; 1948 hiring of Macdonald hired from Denmark to take charge of the Forest Tree Breeding at Petawawa; Farrar transplanted Johnson's plant nursery to a more remote location on Montreal Road in Ottawa; Farra later transplanted the blister rust resistant pines West of Ottawa and at Petawawa, Farrar tried to salvage Heimburger's materials to preserve for future researchers; Forest Tree Breeding part-time staff included Nat Grace R. Manske and F. Peto; Forest Tree Breeding full-time staff included F.P.V. Johnson; Farrar, and Heimburger. <60mn>
