Interview of Dr. F.H. Sanders by Don Phillipson. Subjects discussed include: W.G. Malloch diary; NRC role from 1916 to Labs' creation; Dr. Gordon Shrum and UBC; Dr. T.C. Hebb; Dr. J.C. MacLennan; first NRC job blotting signatures for calibrated thermometer certificates; standards function of NRC Division of Physics and Engineering; Engineering became independent division under Dr. J.H. Parkin, assistant director of aeronautics lab on John Street; Dr. R. W. Boyle; Boyle drew Sanders into ultrasonics; PNRE into asdic and magnetics; Sir Charles Wright; General A.G.L. McNaughton's appointment; Alberta staff sought protest; about half physics staff cooperated and found McNaughton to be good president; George Field; postwar down rating of Crown corporations; Canada missed commercial opportunities where there was fear of depression and the government was unwilling to compete against private enterprise; George Sweny; Col. Eric Phillips; Brig. Wallace; before Tizard Mission in 1940, Henderson went to UK to see radar development; McNaughton and Steele cathode ray direction finder different from radar as was not pulse transponder; in December 1945, Sanders became Dr. C.J. Mackenzie's assistant until early 1948; Dr. Bruce Doern; Sanders invented insect wind tunnel; Physics division was much less formal than biology around 1935; D.C. Rose; Dr. R. Newton; Howard Courtice; associate committees under McNaughton were stimulated by request for revenue-paying research; association committees were exempt from civil service restrictions; Association Committee on Geodesy and Geophysics was main committee and oceanography a sub-group, and later became Joint Committee on Oceanography, that was chaired by Sanders in 1950s; RCN discovered need for ocean physics in wartime and brought in John P. Tilly and Hachey; G.S. Field chaired Joint Committee preceding Sanders; Johnny Green was one of the first of the Aeronautics staff; Mac Kuhring. <2h 20mn>
