Interview of L.P.V. Johnson by Don Phillipson. Subjects discussed include: Johnson working on weed seeds for CDA and not NRC - perennial wheat under the Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Act; U.S. had no organization like GRC or centre like Winnipeg Rust Lab; CDA/NRC agropyrin work - those with best chromosomes were best for use; NRC involved via Dr. Frank Peto's Ph.D. topic; when Johnson started hybridizing at Petawawa, DFS staff ignorant of tree sexuality and no training in tree biology; DFS administration failed to understand Petawawa work ; Johnson was one of four forest geneticists in the world when he started at NRC; life span of trees is a most serious problem hence NRC's interest in vegetative propagation stimulated by rooting hormones; Montreal Road tree nursery with a greenhouse and lab, nursery plot, cytogenetics of selected varieties and plantation to maturity; Montreal Road tree nursery planted in late 1930s to early 1940s since Petawawa was remote and unsuitable; Johnson's war research - 17 good papers published in 9 years at NRC; forestry unlike much NRC work since so long term - all projects should have definitive term; projects included pollen storage, sugar in maples and birches, and hybridization technique; afforestation was a non-scientific aim of many short projects; Canadian law required leaving a few trees for seed; current good practices stem from NRC work; Dr. J. Farrar; Stedman worked on chromosome count project that required dehydration; in 1946, Forest Tree Breeding terminated as the Dominion Forester was replaced and at NRC, lab work was complete for hand over to DFS for plantation phase was envisaged; Dr. W. H. Cook offered Johnson a staff post at PRL Saskatchewan but no promise of scope for forest tree breeding and Johnson resigned to teach in Florida; Johnson's war projects: Ramnis frangula - charcoal for slow-burning shell fuse, arctic vitamin C: from see sprouts to be grown in field kitchens, and Norman Rogers aircraft crash was by sabotage where the soil and plant material in the engine were traced to airport in the Maritimes; war projects: natural rubber; rapeseed introduction to Alberta by Johnson and Alberta drill box samples for weed content; initiated oil seed testing on 1948; Dr. H.R. Sallans; Grier Young worked on Trit. Agropytin and in greenhouse; NRC Associate Committee on Forestry - Johnson formed a subcommittee on forest tree breeding; Dr. F.E. Lathe; chromosome doubling of garden flowers patented by NRC and sold to seed company; some biologists left NRC since no valuable war research in view; Johnson's tree breeding had to continue to not lose genetic material; University of Alberta's contingent transfer to NRC; University of Alberta Plant Science and Field Crop Department collapsed after 1932. <1h 56mn>
