Moving from the Department of Transport to the Department of the Environment in 1972, the Atmospheric Environment Service (AES) is responsible for providing historical, current, and predictive meteorological, marine, and ice information for all areas of Canada and adjacent Canadian waters. In addition, the AES provides weather forecasting information to the general public.
This accession consists of a broad range of operational AES registry files which cover many of the areas of its responsibility. Included are files on stations establishment, meteorological instrument location, installation and acquisition, responses to the public for weather data, the development and implementation of communication systems and data distribution systems to meet the operational requirements of other departments (e.g. Transport, St. Lawrence Seaway Authority); files containing studies and reports, and, finally, several files on weather data acquisition methodology.

These records were originally held in British Columbia. They were transferred to the National Capital Region in 2016 and are available for consultation there.
