The eighth episode of this television documentary series looks at the battles of North Africa, and follows the careers of Field Marshals Rommel and Montgomery and Generals Sir Richard O'Connor and Sir Claude Auchinlek, between 1940 and 1943.~The topics and events covered are: Mussolini's designs in North Africa; General O'Connor's victory in Egypt; Rommel's counter-offensive; Rommel's siege of Tobruk; the Battle of Gazala; the surrender of Tobruk; the Battle of Malta; Cairo as an Allied recreation and rest centre; the Battle of El Alamein; and Montgomery's return push to Tripoli.~The followign shots, scenes and sounds are shown and heard: Mussolini speach-making; Italian POWs trailing through the desert; British POWs moving though the sands; a photograph of General O'Connor being taken prisoner by the Afrika Korp; photographs of Lieutenant General Cunningham, Lieutenant General Wavell, Sir Claude Auchinlek, and Emporor Haile Selassie reviewing troops; a photograph of General Ritchie; Winston Churchill and Field Marshall Montgomery greeting troops of the 8th Army; a grizzly view of a charred corpse lying on a tank on a battle field; a German radio broadcast of the song "Lilly Marlane"; and excerpts from Churchill's speeches.~Comments are made by: Paolo Colacicchi of the Italian Army; General Sir Richard O'Connor, Western Desert Force; General David Belchem, Western Desert Force; Sir Francis de Guingand, Military Intelligence, Cairo; General Siegfried Westphal, Afrika Korp; Field Marshall Lord Harding; and Lawrence Durell, former British Press Officer in Cairo. <60mn>
