Interview of Dr. Lloyd Grisdale, president of the Canadian Medical Association in 1975 and 1976. He speaks about such subjects as: his ancestors from Quebec; his father; his father’s move to Alberta in 1913, where he became principal of the agricultural school at Olds; his father’s political career in Alberta from 1930 to 1935; his father’s service with the Wartime Prices and Trade Board, as deputy administrator of food, administrator of food and vice-chair; his father’s appointment in 1949 as chair of the Royal Commission on the Economic Prospects of Newfoundland; his father’s retirement to his farm in 1951; his uncle J.H. Grisdale, who was deputy minister for the federal Department of Agriculture; his education; studies in agriculture; his studies in medicine at the University of Alberta, starting in 1939; his recollections of his family doctor, Dr. Hartman, and how this spurred his own interest in becoming a doctor; his graduation in 1946; serving as a lieutenant in the army while he was an intern; going into general practice in 1946 with Dr. Arthur Rose at Langley Prairie, British Columbia; going to Edmonton for further medical training; his interest in pediatrics; more training at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto and at Bellevue Hospital in New York; his certification in pediatrics; returning to Edmonton in 1951 to practise there; his involvement with the Perinatal Mortality Committee which had been formed by the Alberta Medical Association; infant mortality, stillbirths and infant death in the first week of life; his election in 1959 to the Council of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta; medical insurance in Alberta; the Canadian Medical Care Act; the Hall Commission; his involvement in the Canadian Medical Association; his association with the University of Alberta faculty of medicine; the role of the medical profession in disciplining its members; a controversy over the production of vaccines by the Connaught Laboratories, arising from a problem with smallpox vaccines sent to Bangladesh; the need for financial support for research into the production of biologicals; the use of drugs such as marijuana; doctors’ salaries; the need for the federal government to provide more funds for medical research; the University of Alberta medical school; and mention of his wife and children.
