Interview of Dr. Harry D. Roberts, president of the Canadian Medical Association in 1971 and 1972. He speaks about such subjects as: his upbringing in St. John’s, Newfoundland; his father and siblings; his education; working on a ship called the Rosalind; studies in commerce at McGill University; other jobs on ships, as a bookkeeper for a grocery business and in the insurance industry and running a soft-drink bottling plant; his father’s lack of support for his desire to continue his university education; taking some prerequisite courses for medical studies at Memorial University; his studies in medicine at Dalhousie University; his internship; working at the Children’s Hospital; doing a locum tenens at Freeport, on the Bay of Fundy; a year as an intern at the General Hospital in St. John’s; his experiences as an assistant intern at the Memorial Hospital for Cancer in New York; returning to St. John’s in 1938 to work in the Grace Hospital, Memorial and the Victoria General Hospital; ; working as a doctor in a mining town on Bell Island; working in obstetrics; the doctor shortage in Newfoundland during the Second World War; his work as a general practitioner who did surgery; his work at the Grace Hospital during the war; doctors’ salaries; the Newfoundland Medical Association; affiliation with the Canadian Medical Association after Newfoundland joined Canada in 1949; his involvement in the Canadian Medical Association; medical care for the merchant marine during the Second World War; the economics of medicine; his disapproval of doctors who think that medicine is the “golden path to riches”; working for the CMA retirement savings plan; his experiences as CMA president; universal medicare; the negotiation of fee schedules; changes in medical practice over the years, such as the introduction of antibiotics; the Newfoundland Cottage Hospital Service; issues such as abortion, sterilization and euthanasia; the supply of doctors in Canada; burrsaries for medical students from Newfoundland; providing medical training to other countries; the World Medical Association and his retirement.
