Interview of Dr. Gordon Fahrni, president of the Canadian Medical Association in 1941 and 1942. He speaks about such subjects as: his family background; his father’s birth in Switzerland in 1848 and immigration to America; his father’s move to Manitoba in 1871; his father’s livery barn and freight service; his mother’s family background; his family’s farm; his education; attending medical school; his graduation in 1911; his training in surgery; his becoming a specialist in surgery; the treatment of diseases such as goitre and other thyroid disorders; advances in treatment of diseases such as acute appendicitis, abdominal aneurysms and angina pectoris; the use of antibiotics to treat infectious diseases; his marriage in 1913; his work on committees in medical school; his work for the Manitoba Medical Association, for which he served as president in 1923; his work for the Canadian Medical Association; the impact of the Second World War on the medical profession in Canada and the need to find replacements for doctors who joined the military; the Procurement and Assignment Committee; Dr. Brock Chisholm; his becoming a consulting surgeon to help organize military surgical needs in Canada and overseas hospital units; standards of physical fitness for people joining the military; treating recruits for hernia and goitre; the importance of getting surgery patients ambulatory as soon as possible after the operation; discussions in the 1930s about taking the first steps towards medical insurance; the evolution of health insurance; the cost of hospital care; his views of the problems with the health insurance system; the declining reputation of doctors; the preoccupation of the medical profession with financial matters; current socioeconomic problems in society; Doukhobors and Ukrainians among his patients; his views on birth control procedures such as vasectomies; euthanasia; drug addiction; abortion; the satisfaction he felt when he was teaching surgery for close to 40 years; and his retirement.
