A king among men, born Douglas Smith and knighted Lord Strathcona the life experiences and accomplishments of someone like this are not easily summarized. Manning a northern outpost of the Hudson Bay Company set the stage for this young man to take great strides in the opportunities for immigrants and the rewards of honesty and hard work. Driving the last spike in the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1885 (a company he co-owned) was a feat along with a famous photograph that let the rest of the world know what great things he was destined for. Beyond all his personal feats probably the most significant was his act of generosity when he established the Lord Strathcona fund, the sole purpose of which was to bring into schools a physical training program for all the young men and women of our country.

This film called “His name was Smith” sponsored by Ontario Committee of the Strathcona Trust gives the viewer a peek into what the Lord Strathcona fund has grown into, featuring schools, camps and cadets participating in the physical challenges that Donald Smith had hoped would bring a sense of confidence and bravery to the young people of our country. Group activities such as parades, aerobic exercises, military training, classroom seminars, and engine repair, as well as group outings that include swimming, boating, hiking and sports.
